Global Warming : Politics or
Science?
The answer, of course, is that politics is science, the science
of government or policy. It is impossible to separate global warming
science, from global warming politics. They are inseparably linked.
Where the distinction lies, is how global warming is used to further
political agendas, on both sides. For example, there is nothing more
wrong with climate skeptics being funded by ExxonMobil, than there is
for climate alarmists like Heidi
Cullen to receive compensation from the Weather Channel. I have
no problem with the Weather Channel paying Dr. Cullen to express her
view 30 minutes each week. However, when one side tries to silence
the other, then I think most reasonable people would agree that
it's wrong. For example...
Storm
Hits Weather Community Over Climate Expert's Global Warming Claims
- WASHINGTON - The Weather Channel is standing by a climatologist who
is taking some heat after blogging that TV weather forecasters skeptical
about man-made global warming theories should lose their professional
certification. Climate expert Heidi Cullen defended herself last week
in The Weather Channel's One Degree Climate Change blog after questioning
the fitness of meteorologists who disagree with her conclusions. Click
here to read Cullen's controversial global warming blog.
Global Warming : Liberals vs.
Conservatives
Why are liberals more likely to believe that man is causing global
warming, and conservatives more likely to be skeptical? There are several
reasons that may account for this. First, follow the money.
Liberals and Grants
The governments and learning institutions of the western world provide
grant money to research groups and individuals to solve problems. No
problems, no money. First we need a problem that everyone can understand
and accept. In the 1970's it was global cooling.
And just like today, the culprit was man, more specifically, the burning
of fossil fuels by man. That's right, the same burning of fossil fuels
that was supposed to cause another mini ice age, is now causing global
warming. How can that be? Back then we were told that the factories
burning all that nasty coal were polluting the atmosphere with tiny
particles and filtering out the sun's light. Automobiles were also contributing
to the problem by expelling lead, ozone, carbon monoxide and other particles
into the atmosphere. So now that we have a problem and a cause, we need
to find a solution. Finding a solution to the problem requires more...you
guessed it, grant money. And as usual, the solution is to come in the
form of legislation. Trouble is, we didn't get cooler, we got warmer.
So much for global cooling. In the mean time, while we were thawing
out, other issues came and went, like the ozone layer, acid rain, and
of course, the moratorium on building nuclear power plants. It's ironic
that our nation's carbon footprint would be smaller now if we
were using fission instead of fossil fuels, but I digress.
In my view, there is simply not enough scientific
evidence to support the assertion that catastrophic global warming is
eminent, and that man is the cause.
Global Warming Political News
No surprise here
Obama
warms to using Gore's advice - By The Denver Post - Al Gore's endorsement
is perhaps the most coveted by Democratic candidates in the presidential
contest. (Jeff Chui, The Associated Press )WALLINGFORD, Pa. -- Sen.
Barack Obama said Wednesday that he would give Al Gore, a Nobel Prize
winner, a major role in an Obama administration to address global warming.
At a town-hall meeting, Obama was asked whether he would tap the former
vice president for his Cabinet, or an even higher-level office, to handle
global warming. "I would," Obama said... (03/31/08)
Global
warming bill a double-edged sword - State businesses fear economic
fallout - BY PAUL HUGHES | REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN - HARTFORD -- A global
warming bill has business groups steaming -- and environmental groups
beaming -- about a proposed cap on greenhouse gas emissions.
Business leaders are warning of dire consequences should the legislation
become law, and environmentalists are sounding alarms about the repercussions
of not reducing pollution.
The debate is taking place amid rising concerns about the state economy
and reports that Connecticut isn't on track to meet currents goals for
reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases. (03/31/08)
EPA
Chief's Australia Trip Irks Sen. Boxer - Good!
Stephen Power reports on environmental and energy policy.
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Stephen Johnson has riled
Democrats again -- this time over his travel plans.
California Sen. Barbara Boxer, in a letter
to Johnson Wednesday, complained that he and "a substantial number
of EPA staff members" are planning a trip to Australia that will
make him unavailable to testify before Congress "on certain important
matters through much of April." (03/27/08)
Rep.
Bachmann and global warming - When we elect members to Congress,
it's with the hope that they will serve with a firm grasp on reality
and with a mind open enough to at least try to solve even our most vexing
of problems.
That does'’t seem to be the case with U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann,
R-Minn., at least on the global warming issue.
In a story that's making state and national headlines this week, Bachmann
-- who represents the northern suburbs and St. Cloud area -- has introduced
a bill with the light-hearted title, "Light Bulb Freedom of Choice
Act." I love it!
It’s an attempt to repeal a nationwide effort to phase out conventional
light bulbs in favor of the longer-lasting, more-efficient compact fluorescent
lights, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.
Bachmann argues that she is trying to preserve homeowners' and others'
rights to use whatever kind of light bulb they want -- even if it costs
them more in electrical expenses.
We're not going to fight her on that, (then
why write this idiotic editorial?) although it’s a little
silly to discourage the use of more efficient bulbs. People probably
should be able to have some choice in how they light their homes.
But there are things behind Bachmann’s bill -- including ignoring
sound industry advice plus her take on global warming -- that make us
question her credibility.
The Star Tribune reported Wednesday that Bachmann recently told a meeting
of Sherburne County Republicans that any human connection to global
warming is "voodoo, nonsense, hokum, a hoax"... WOW!
The congresswoman spoke the truth. Oh, the horror! (03/27/08)
'Mush-Mind
McCain Continues To Embrace The Global Warming Hoax?' - By Malcolm
Hedges - Today Senator John McCain in his major speech continued to
call for International economic and financial destruction in the name
of fixing "Global Warming".
The world is facing "Global Cooling" and Senator McCain who
seems to live in a cave and have no concept of the real world wants
everybody to be forced to live in abstract poverty to fight "Global
Warming" ?
As Global Cooling moves forward, brought to us by the Sun, crops will
become harder to grow, food will be become a premium commodity and mored
energy for heating will be needed by all of the world.
Meanwhile the GreeenIsm fanatics will continue to fight any reasonable
efforts to increase supplies of energy... (03/26/08)
The
Global Warming Economy: Green Collar Jobs to the Rescue? - By Mike
Bates - It's the latest. It's the greatest. Green collar jobs are going
to help turn around the economy if Democrats have their way. Senator
Barack Obama last month promised the government would spend $150 billion
to create 5 million such jobs. At $30,000 a pop, that’s placing a
great deal of faith in federal job training.
Even your typical white person has hopped on the green bandwagon. Also
last month, Senator Hillary Clinton argued in a debate: “We can create
at least five million new jobs. . . I helped to pass legislation to
begin a training program for green collar jobs. I want to see people.
. . trained to do the work that will put solar panels on roofs, install
wind turbines, do geothermal, take advantage of biofuels.” (03/26/08)
Some
Biofuels Cause Global Warming! What Does that Tell Us? - By Ethan
G. - The word is now out: many biofuels, such as corn ethanol, actually
cause global warming according to two studies published in Science in
February. Why? Their production leads to clearing of wilderness to make
way for agricultural land. Yet the vegetation cleared away helps fight
global warming by sequestering carbon dioxide.
This report came as no surprise. Environmentalists such as Lester Brown
had long warned that biofuels, particularly from corn, would do more
harm than good (Earth Policy). In the United States corn is grown using
oil and oil products, so the total energy produced is relatively small.
Brazil extracts biofuel from sugar cane, which is far more efficient.
Unfortunately growing extra sugar cane spurs the clearing of the Amazonian
rain forest, an irreplaceable environmental treasure trove. (03/24/08)
Sen.
Kerry Blames Tornados on Global Warming - Former Democratic presidential
nominee blames 'intense storms' that have killed more than 50 on climate
change. - By Jeff Poor, Business & Media Institute - Politicians
using tragedy to advance an agenda has been a tried-and-true strategy.
Paint the idea green and a natural catastrophe became political fodder
for former Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry (Mass.)
Kerry appeared on MSNBC on February 6 to discuss storms that have killed
at least 50 people throughout the Southeastern United States. So, of
course, Kerry used the platform to advance global warming alarmism.

Bill
Clinton Says Slow Down Economy To Combat Global Warming - BILL Clinton
says that to combat global warming industrialized nations need to: "We
just have to slow down our economy and cut back our greenhouse gas emissions
'cause we have to save the planet for our grandchildren."
This appears an odd thing to say, with the US worried about recession.
(Video here.)
But, then, if there is a recession, President Hillary Clinton can blame
it on global warming. Recession will be a good thing.
Right? Right on! (01/31/08)
'Straight
Talk Express' takes scenic route to truth - By Ann Coulter - John
McCain is Bob Dole minus the charm, conservatism and youth. Like McCain,
pollsters assured us that Dole was the most "electable" Republican.
Unlike McCain, Dole didn't lie all the time while claiming to engage
in Straight Talk.
Of course, I might lie constantly too, if I were seeking the Republican
presidential nomination after enthusiastically promoting amnesty for
illegal aliens, Social Security credit for illegal aliens, criminal
trials for terrorists, stem-cell research on human embryos, crackpot
global warming legislation and free speech-crushing campaign-finance
laws... (01/23/08)
What a sloppy post from The Detroit Free Press.

The
candidates' views on global warming - January 13, 2008
DEMOCRATS
Hillary Clinton
Cap-and-trade program for carbon emissions. Reduce electricity use 20%
from projected levels by 2020. Increase fuel efficiency standards to
55 m.p.h. by 2030. Typical socialist solution.
John Edwards
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020 and 80% by 2050. Seek
new world climate treaty. Great! Another global
treaty to give away more of our sovereignty. End tax "giveaways"
for big oil companies. Translation: Raise your
taxes.
Mike Huckabee
Climate change is national security issue. Cap carbon emissions. Work
with other global polluters. Launch global scientific effort to end
dependence on oil. No wonder the press likes
Huckabee so much. They know a liberal when they see one. Maybe someone
should tell the bonehead author that he's a Republican!
Dennis Kucinich
Support Kyoto treaty. Join international efforts to reduce emissions
of greenhouse gases. Maybe we should let Shirley
Maclaine and the aliens (the ones in the sky) fix it.
Barack Obama
Create cap-and-trade program to reduce carbon emissions to 80% below
1990 levels by 2050. Make oil, coal and gas companies pay for emission
quotas. Typical tax and spend liberal tripe.
Big Corporations = bad.
REPUBLICAN
Rudy Giuliani
Calls it serious long-term problem but isn't sure "we have to distort
our whole economy and our whole life." Reduce emissions with nuclear
energy, hydro and solar power. Not bad.
Mike Huckabee
Calls it a spiritual issue, saying he has a responsibility to take care
of the Earth. Supports certain cap-and-trade policies. Oh,
this Mike Huckabee, the Republican. Is there two Huckabee's now? For
a while there was two Thompsons... By the way, any "conservative"
that thinks cap-and-trade is a good thing might as well just join the
Dems.
Duncan Hunter
Questions whether climate change is caused by mankind. Says cutting
U.S. reliance on foreign oil can help the climate. BINGO!
We have a winner...common sense!
John McCain
Says it's real. Supports cap-and-trade policy on carbon emissions and
global effort to curb them. Maybe we could
have the other aliens (the ones from Mexizona) to solve it.
Con Paul
Favors private and local anti-pollution initiatives over federal intervention.
Sees nuclear energy as alternative to oil and gas. Sounds
good to me. Too bad he's a nut.
Mitt Romany
"Kyoto-style sweeping mandates would kill jobs, depress growth
and shift manufacturing to the dirtiest developing nations." Develop
alternative energy. Sounds like a touch of
common sense here.
Fred Thompson
Do more research to determine human impact. Says it may be economically
unfeasible for United States to adopt global warming restrictions unless
China and India take part. Research?
For what Fred?
OUR VIEW: (the Detroit Free Press' view
that is...)
The editorial board's position We support efforts to limit global warming
gases, and believe a carbon tax would be the simplest, most efficient
way to prod action and spur technologies that can together cut down
on emissions and ease U.S. dependence on foreign energy sources. We
have taken a dim view of CAFE standards, which unfairly single out the
Detroit three, leaving vast sources of pollution untouched. What
a surprise.

Politics
of global warming - I read with great interest, Mr. Tim Rehder's
Illogical "Logic" in elevating Al Gore as a climatologist,
scientific writer and expert on "Global Warming". For your
readers who wish to use their own innate intelligence and logic, I refer
them to: Unstoppable
Global Warming: Every 1500 Years, by S. Fred Singer, PhD.
Dr Singer is professor emeritus of environmental science at the University
of Virginia, and has credentials/publications that show Al Gore to be
a kindergardner on the issue of our environment/climate. Mr. Gore's
"book" is at best a propaganda device to promote him and his
elitist, socialistic agenda.
Of course our climate warms (and also cools), but: 1. man is not the
driving force behind climate warming, it is solar activity, 2. CO2 rises
occur after the climate warms, not as the precipitating factor, and
3. climate warming is more beneficial to mankind than is global
cooling.
No Mr. Rehder, we do not all need to be published climatologists to
logically examine scientific literature, but we do need to be open-minded
and to look critically at data. Beware the social scientist with his
political agendas and propaganda. ~ Jim McCoy, Boerne, Texas

The
Left's Global Warming Solution: No More Children! - By Ben Shapiro
- Proving once again that foolish ideas don't die or fade away -- they
walk the earth eternally, preying on the brains of the living -- scientists
at a UK think tank have determined that the greatest threat to the planet
is more human beings. "The effect on the planet of having one child
less is an order of magnitude greater than all these other things we
might do, such as switching off lights," explains Professor John
Guillebaud, co-chairman of the Optimum Population Trust (OPT). "The
greatest thing anyone in Britain could do to help the future of the
planet would be to have one less child." (05/09/07)
The
Climate War Part 1: Terrorism - By Joe O'Connell - The easiest way
for radical global warming advocates to convince people of their cause
is to carpet the media wall-to-wall with articles, movies, charity concerts,
pressure campaigns, reports, advertisements and protests all urging
only one view. By dominating the media reporting one can do more than
just persuade with reporting. With evidence being presented as incontrovertible
and unchallenged the public is being misinformed that global warming
is exactly the Armageddon being portrayed. (05/02/07)
Assessing
the Supreme Court's CO2 Ruling - William O'Keefe CEO, The Marshall
Institute - April 1, the day that the Supreme Court ruled that the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) had authority to regulate carbon dioxide (CO2)
emissions from automobiles, was a day of bitter triumph. A triumph of
judicial activism over factual and dispassionate analysis, a triumph
of ideology over objective analysis and legal precedent, a triumph of
political science - the blend of science, hypothesis and orthodoxy -
over science and facts, and a triumph of image over reality. (05/01/07)
Global
warming politics - The current debate about global warming is "completely
irrational," and people need to start taking a different approach,
say two Ottawa scientists. Carleton University science professor Tim
Patterson said global warming will not bring about the downfall of life
on the planet. (04/25/07)
Politics,

columnists Dan Nebert ("Global warming related to our Earth's natural
cycles," April 8) and Thomas Lowell ("Global warming no longer
a question," April 16) for addressing global warming in a gentlemanly
and non-political fashion. But it may be too late for that. It is already
a political issue. What was once a discussion of scientific differences
of opinion may now be inseparable from domestic and geopolitical agendas
and their respective ideologies. (04/25/07)

In order to gain some objective input into this discourse, I turned

Gore is Right... I'm Henry the VIII, I am! - By JB Williams - Liberals
prefer the religion of science, scientist saviors and nutcase professional
failure Al Gore as their prophet... As for the rest of us, a good dose
of common sense reality will keep the fruitcake fear-driven global nightmare
freaks away. God how I yearn for the 60's styled liberals who cared
only about good rock-n-roll, free sex and cheap pot. The modern crop
of "America is the evil empire" liberals, always in search
of the next opportunity to scare average Americans into voting themselves
federal tyranny, make Marx and Lenin look conservative. (03/23/07)
The
Global Warming As A Political Movement - Is the Global Warming real?
The best way to answer this question would be a thorough scientific
study carried out by impartial scientists. However, there are a couple
problems with such a study. First, the system under study is exceptionally
complex. Simple physical models (like the model of spherical horse in
vacuum) cannot not grasp all the complexity and thus are useless. As
for complicated models, they have a tendency to predict whatever their
creators build into them. Second problem is to find impartial scientists.
Whatever they think about themselves, scientists often tend to accept
the matearilistic, and therefore, leftist points of view. (03/23/07)
