Global warming right on schedule - By PETER FRIEDMAN - Much of the current panic began when Dr. Michael Mann and his coauthors published their now-discredited "hockey stick" temperature plot — so named for its shape that showed a long trend of steady temperature over a thousand-year period and a sudden rise since the early 1900s. Dr. Mann's hockey stick became the foundation for policy leaders advocating mandatory emissions caps.
Fortunately for mankind (but unfortunately for the professional reputation of Dr. Mann), the hockey stick was convincingly shown to be an artifact of his flawed statistical methodology, which exaggerated recent data and smoothed older data. Stephen McIntyre even demonstrated that Dr. Mann's erroneous methodology generated hockey stick plots even when random data were inserted. (02/21/08)

STUMPTALK: A dangerous movement sweeps the nation - By Phil Billington / Chronicle contributor - A dangerous movement driven by the notion that global warming is manmade is steamrolling the nation. Though climatologists have known about global warming for decades, the hoax that it was manmade was born when geoscientist Michael Mann published the famous "Hockey Stick" plot in 1998, claiming that the earth, after remaining cool for centuries during the medieval era, suddenly began to heat up about 100 years ago -- just at the time that the burning of coal and oil led to an increase in atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide.
But alas, two Canadian scientists, McIntyre and McKitrick, exposed Mann's poor math; the Hockey Stick is a fraud. Bad science, however, did not discourage the left-wing hacks at the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from publishing a fraudulent report using Mann's thesis. IPCC claimed 2500 scientists were in support, which the media spun to say, "The majority of world's top scientists agree that global climate change is due to human activity." But scientists rebelled. (IPCC revised its Web site to say "2500 expert reviewers," and further admitted it does not carry out climate research but merely bases its assessment on peer review of published technical literature.) Finding the truth in global warming reports - The IPCC is a government organization (as are many of the sources Mr. Teeple uses), which ignores completely, the input and research from many of the scientists on the panel who believe otherwise from what they are told to believe. Many of these scientists end up leaving the panel as a result of their research and their voices not being heard or printed. (04/21/07)

Backing for hockey stick graph - The IPCC used a version of the diagram in its last assessment. The Earth was hotter in the late 20th Century than it had been in the last 400 or possibly 1,000 years, a report requested by the US Congress concludes. BBCNews (06/23/06)
